British Sign Language (BSL)
British Sign Language (BSL) is the visual language used by many Deaf people in the UK. It has its own grammar, vocabulary, and structure, making it a complete and rich language in its own right, not just a version of spoken English. Learning BSL helps children develop valuable communication skills and promotes inclusion, empathy, and understanding of the Deaf community. By learning to sign, children can connect with more people, celebrate diversity, and help create a more inclusive society where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
As a school we are learning British Sign Language as part of our language work. We introduce new signs through topic sessions and our daily BSL time. We follow a progressive scheme of work and it is our aim that learners leave our school in Year 6 able to communicate using a wide variety of BSL signs.
Our Head Pupils introduce a 'sign of the week' in our weekly celebration assembly, they also present a certificate to the learner they feel has tried particularly hard to use BSL around the school.
