ABACUS

At Ysgol Cefn Meiriadog we follow the Abacus Maths scheme from Year 1 upwards.

Abacus is a unique maths toolkit that works to inspire a love of maths amongst our learners and helps every child master mathematical concepts. It’s built on research, with a focus on fluency and logical reasoning, to help ensure mastery of skills for all.

Children in Ysgol Cefn Meiriadog have four Abacus Maths lessons a week with children working in groups appropriate for their ability. Regular assessments ensure children are making appropriate progress with further support or challenge provided where needed.

NUMICON

Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Numicon approach to learning Maths. Numicon is a hands-on, visual maths teaching approach, using colourful, hole-punched shapes that represent numbers 1-10 to build understanding of number relationships and patterns. This multi-sensory system allows children to physically interact with numbers, helping them grasp abstract maths concepts through concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) learning.
